Dumpster and demolition permits in Southern Indiana

Who to ask before a dumpster goes in the street or a building comes down, for the ten towns we serve in Clark, Floyd and Scott counties.

01The short answer

When a dumpster or a teardown needs a permit

The dumpster permits we found in our towns are for a can set in the street: Sellersburg’s right-of-way permit lists dumpsters and a dumpster fee, and in New Albany the Board of Public Works reviews dumpster permit requests. We set our 15 and 20 yard roll-offs where you point, so most of our customers keep them on their own property.

Tearing a building down is where permits come up most. Jeffersonville, New Albany, Sellersburg and Georgetown each have their own demolition paperwork, and the unincorporated towns go through their county. Rules change, so call the office before the teardown is on the calendar.

The state notice for demolitions

Indiana’s environmental agency, IDEM, asks for a demolition notice at least 10 working days before a regulated teardown starts. It also says noncommercial residential buildings with four or fewer dwelling units, such as homes, are exempt from its asbestos emission rules, though owners still follow waste disposal rules and local ordinances. A building used as a business is a different case.

Ask us when you book a teardown and we will go over what needs to happen before the work starts and who you call. Sellersburg’s wrecking form says public streets, curbs and sidewalks have to be protected from damage, and Georgetown’s says the applicant keeps debris and mud off the roads, which is part of why our debris goes straight into a roll-off.

Who to call in each town

Each office below comes from that town’s or county’s own website. Henryville, New Washington and Floyds Knobs are unincorporated, so they go through their county; the cities and towns each have their own office. Rules change, so call before the teardown is on the calendar.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my driveway?

The dumpster permits we found in our towns are for a can in the street or public right-of-way, like Sellersburg’s right-of-way permit. A can on your own driveway usually stays off that list, but ask your town if you are not sure.

We set the can where you point, on your property, wherever the truck can safely reach.

Who gets the demolition permit, me or you?

Ask your town office who they want on the application; the rules differ from town to town.

Ask us when you book and we will go over what needs to happen before the teardown starts and who you call.

Is there a state notice before a teardown?

For regulated teardowns, yes: IDEM asks for a demolition notice at least 10 working days ahead.

IDEM says noncommercial residential buildings with four or fewer dwelling units are exempt from its asbestos rules.
