01The short answer

What goes in our dumpsters

Customers have rented our 15 and 20 yard roll-offs for a move, a home clean-up, a fence job and a winter remodeling project, and most of what comes out of jobs like those can go in. What can’t go in is set mostly by Indiana’s landfill rule, because that is where the load ends up.

The rule is 329 IAC 10-9-2. It keeps liquids, hazardous waste, lead-acid batteries, whole tires, appliances still holding refrigerant and regulated asbestos out of Indiana’s trash landfills. If you are not sure about something, text a photo of it to (812) 207-7155 before it goes in. It takes a minute, and it is a lot easier than digging it back out.

What stays out of the dumpster

Paint, stain, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil and fuel are household hazardous waste and go to the county drop-off. Car batteries and propane tanks stay out too. Tires, televisions, computers and anything with a screen go to recycling instead, and so does an old refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner until its refrigerant has been removed.

Dirt and concrete are their own case. Customers can’t load dirt or concrete into our dumpsters. We will haul dirt or concrete when we are the ones loading it, so call or text and describe the pile.

Brush, limbs and yard waste

Indiana’s landfill rule lists vegetative matter among what its trash landfills keep out. A few branches mixed into a cleanout are one thing; a can that is mostly brush, limbs or leaves is another. Text us before you load one, so we can plan where it goes. For a whole tree that came down, see fallen tree cleanup.

Where the rest goes, by county

Clark County (Charlestown, Henryville, Sellersburg, Jeffersonville, New Washington): household hazardous waste goes to the county facility at 112 Industrial Way in Charlestown, by appointment, per the county’s recycling page. The Recycling District takes electronics by the pound and passenger tires off the rim, each for a fee, and has paused taking refrigerators and other items with coolant.

Floyd County (New Albany, Georgetown, Floyds Knobs): the Grant Line Road center at 3005 Grant Line Road in New Albany holds household hazardous waste days on the second Saturday of the month, April through October. The Galena site in Floyds Knobs does not take electronics or household hazardous waste.

Scott County (Scottsburg, Austin): the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District holds two household hazardous waste days a year, and charges a disposal fee for screened electronics and for items with refrigerant. Each town page repeats the drop-off for that town.

  • Furniture, boxes and remodel debris
  • No tires, paint, batteries or fuel
  • No electronics or refrigerant appliances
  • Dirt or concrete only when we load it
  • Text a photo if unsure

Can I put furniture in the dumpster?

Household junk, furniture, boxes and remodel debris are what most of our dumpsters carry. Text us about anything you are unsure of before it goes in.

Matt Johnson wrote about our “Super good response on text when any questions as to what can go in dumpster.”

Can I put dirt or concrete in it?

Not by you. Customers can’t load dirt or concrete into our dumpsters, but we will haul dirt or concrete when we are the ones loading it.

Call or text and describe the pile.

Can tires go in a dumpster?

No. Indiana’s landfill rule keeps whole tires out of the landfill, which is where a dumpster load goes.

The Clark County Recycling District takes passenger tires off the rim, for a fee.

Can I throw away an old TV or computer?

Not in the dumpster. Indiana households can’t put many electronics in the trash, so they go to the county recycling center instead.

Clark County’s Recycling District takes them for a fee, and the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District charges a disposal fee for screened electronics.

What about an old refrigerator or air conditioner?

Not while it still holds refrigerant. Indiana’s landfill rule keeps those appliances out.

Ask your county drop-off first: Clark County has paused taking items with coolant.
